A first visit to Kunming: city streets and separate shores

Find the airport connection, choose a city walk and name the lakeside park you want to visit.

Begin with three separate places: the airport, central Kunming and the shores of Dianchi. A clear area to explore is more useful than an ambitious list of lakeside stops.

Connect from Changshui Airport

Airport Center metro station is on level B2 of the terminal. Line 6 connects the airport with Tangzixiang and offers interchanges along the way. Save your accommodation’s Chinese address and nearest station before travelling.

Choose rail or a ground connection around your arrival time. The airport page explains the connection, rather than guaranteeing a train for a late flight. Confirm that evening’s available transport before heading to a waiting area.

A city lake and a much larger shoreline

Green Lake is in central Kunming. Combine part of the park with nearby cultural spaces for a city walk. Music, shade and residents enjoying the public space give the landscape a human scale.

Dianchi lies at the city’s edge. Haigeng and Laoyuhe are among its separate lakeside parks. Choose one by its full name, then locate its entrance and return pickup point. “Dianchi Lake” alone is too broad a destination.

Prepare a park walk and a museum visit separately

A walk beside a lake does not establish a museum’s opening arrangements. For a particular exhibition or building, use that venue’s own opening and reservation information and identify its entrance.

Carry a layer for changing wind or rain and choose comfortable walking shoes. Find the return road before settling into a lakeside view. Ask before photographing residents taking part in activities.

Order the preparation, then the ingredients

Kunming offers small-pot, tofu-topped, dressed and crossing-the-bridge rice noodles. Name the style first, then ask about broth, meat and chilli. Communicate specific dietary requirements rather than relying on “mild”.

Keep three names on your phone

Your accommodation’s Chinese address, the chosen park or venue, and your return pickup point. Place all three on the same map before leaving.

Get your bearings first; leave room for the city’s everyday life afterwards.
