Xi’an: separate the old city from the imperial tombs

Understand the city’s different districts before booking the Terracotta Army.

Xi’an has a dense history, but its landmarks are not all neighbours. The walls and pagodas belong to different chapters; the Terracotta Army lies in Lintong. Separate these areas on a map to spend less attention on backtracking and more on what you came to see.

Arrival and a useful neighbourhood base

Xi’an North and Xi’an railway station are different stations. Keep the exact name on your ticket and your hotel’s Chinese address, rather than asking for a generic “Xi’an train station”. Choose accommodation around the neighbourhood you want to walk through repeatedly. The Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum publishes separate transport guidance for the airport and these railway stations.

The tombs are a separate journey

Understand the walled old city, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda area to the south and Lintong as distinct parts of your visit. The mausoleum museum includes the Terracotta Warriors area and Lishan Garden; one excavation pit is not the entire site. Read its official guide before choosing what suits your interests and walking ability. Similar-sounding commercial attractions are not the museum itself.

Book through the museum

The museum uses real-name, timed reservations, including for international visitors. Its official guide permits passport information for booking and requires the original valid document for admission. Use the museum website or the official WeChat accounts it names. Secure the reservation before arranging transport and interpretation. Other museums, the city wall and performances have separate admission arrangements.

Taste the different textures of Guanzhong

Lamb paomo, liangpi and broad biangbiang noodles offer contrasting textures. Roujiamo fillings also vary. If you need halal food, check the establishment’s own information and ask directly; a shared street address is not a guarantee of identical ingredients or preparation.

Check the destination name

Confirm the museum’s full name, your date, time slot, document and ticket type. Archaeological interpretation is a more useful introduction than an unrelated shop promising a “mysterious underground palace”.

A clear map makes room for the city’s many layers.
