Start with where you will stay and the stretch of lake you most want to see. Give the tea hills their own space, rather than treating Hangzhou as a race around a shoreline.
Choose transport around your address
Xiaoshan Airport connects to Metro Lines 1, 7 and 19. Save your accommodation’s Chinese address and nearest station before choosing a line. Last trains differ by line and direction: a late arrival needs the relevant departure time, not just the airport station’s overall opening hours.
Choose accommodation around what matters to you: lakeside walks or time in the tea hills. Ask where luggage can be delivered. For a rail arrival, check the full station name on your booking instead of treating “Hangzhou” as one arrival point.

Understand the lake and the tea hills
West Lake brings water, causeways and surrounding hills into a connected cultural landscape. Choose a manageable section of shore and a view where you want to pause. The tea hills and a museum visit deserve separate attention.
The China National Tea Museum has two sites: Shuangfeng at 88 Longjing Road, and Longjing at 268 Wengjiashan. Shuangfeng includes exhibitions on Chinese tea culture and West Lake Longjing; Longjing rises along a hillside. Use the site name when navigating or booking a car.
Match the visit to its opening arrangements
The museum lists 09:00–16:30, with Tuesday closure except on public holidays. Read the notice for your chosen site before setting out. A tea plantation photograph does not include permission to join picking or production.
Lakeside walking, exhibition visits and boat trips are distinct experiences. Read what each ticket covers. On a wet day, leave the outdoor walk flexible and give the tea exhibitions more attention.
At the table: Longjing shrimp and Dongpo pork
These Hangzhou classics introduce tea with shrimp and slowly cooked pork. Explain any shellfish, pork or alcohol restrictions, then ask about the kitchen’s ingredients and portion sizes.
Keep these details to hand
Save your Chinese accommodation address, the full museum site name and the last train in your return direction. Enter tea-growing or working areas only with permission.
A little clarity about entrances and directions leaves more room for the scenery.
